To say that Fred Kahn is the archetype and inspiration for the deregulatory policies that have transformed a series of network industries over the last thirty years is no exaggeration. In this conference, we will bring together a group of policymakers, former policymakers, academics, and industry leaders from across the last several decades to evaluate the legacy of deregulation, with particular attention to and appreciation for Fred Kahn’s leadership and teachings in the area.

The 2008 Technology Roundtable is designed as a discussion of 18 participants. Phil Weiser, University of Colorado professor of law and telecommunications and executive director of the Silicon Flatirons Center, will lead the Technology Roundtable, encouraging a dynamic, substantive interchange among the participants. Seated in a venue with a capacity for 200 persons, the audience for the Technology Roundtable will be by invitation and include individuals with a particular interest in the subject of technology.

The communications technology used by public safety constitutes a critical element of our homeland security infrastructure. From the point at which a citizen calls 911, much of the ability of first responders to manage an emergency situation rests on the effectiveness of their information and communications technology. This conference will take a look forward at the future of emergency response, evaluating how new technologies can be adopted to enable first responders to operate more effectively.

To evaluate the appropriate role for government policy in facilitating entrepreneurship and innovation, this conference will bring together a group of industry leaders.
