Despite private equity’s record growth, signs of a slow down are surfacing. In this Roundtable, participants highlighted some of the current and systemic issues facing the private equity industry.

On August 25, 2010, the Silicon Flatirons Center brought together a number of experts in the fields of economics, technology and policy, including public utility commissioners, economics professors, financial analysts, and policy advisors, to discuss regulatory issues facing smart grid deployment in the United States. The discussion was held at the University of Colorado School of Law and touched upon the economics of the smart grid, incentives for the variety of stakeholders in the smart grid effort, the technological challenges of implementing a “smart” electricity generation and distribution system and its constituent technologies, and the policy implications at both state and federal levels.

To say that Fred Kahn is the archetype and inspiration for the deregulatory policies that have transformed a series of network industries over the last thirty years is no exaggeration. In this conference, we will bring together a group of policymakers, former policymakers, academics, and industry leaders from across the last several decades to evaluate the legacy of deregulation, with particular attention to and appreciation for Fred Kahn’s leadership and teachings in the area.

The role of patents in our economy is becoming more critical as we move toward an economy where value is represented by intangible assets rather than tangible ones. The America Invents Act was enacted to update the Patent Act and enable the Patent Office to grapple with an increasing number of patent applications. Even with the reforms embodied in that law, commenters and practitioners have offered a series of differing analysis from economic, ethical or technological perspectives. At this conference, we will bring together some of the leading thinkers on patent policy and examine the arguments and metaphors about the future of patent policy.
