A Discussion with UN Special Rapporteur David Kaye on President Trump’s “Executive Order on Preventing Online Censorship”

President Trump signed an executive order calling for federal agencies to scrutinize social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. David Kaye, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Freedom of Opinion and Expression, joined Silicon Flatirons to discuss the executive order. Kaye was joined by Colorado Law Professor Blake Reid, a long-time Silicon Flatirons affiliate who recently took on the title of Initiative Director for the newly-minted Telecommunications and Platforms Initiative. The naming of this Initiative marks a clear commitment to strengthening Silicon Flatirons’ historic focus on telecommunications and the digital environment. The conversation was hosted by Silicon Flatirons Executive Director Amie Stepanovich, and it explored the basics of the executive order, including the implications for technology policy, free expression, and the upcoming election. It is available to watch here.
