James is an economist and Executive Director of the Technology and Policy Research Initiative at Boston University School of Law.

He researches innovation and technology, including how technology impacts jobs, wages, and skills and how technology is increasing the dominance of large firms.  His most recent book, Learning by Doing: The Real Connection Between Innovation, Wages, and Wealth, looks at history to understand how new technologies affect wages and skills today. His research has been widely cited in the press as well as by the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Federal Trade Commission. James has also been a successful innovator and CEO of a software company.
