On August 25, 2010, the Silicon Flatirons Center brought together a number of experts in the fields of economics, technology and policy, including public utility commissioners, economics professors, financial analysts, and policy advisors, to discuss regulatory issues facing smart grid deployment in the United States. The discussion was held at the University of Colorado School of Law and touched upon the economics of the smart grid, incentives for the variety of stakeholders in the smart grid effort, the technological challenges of implementing a “smart” electricity generation and distribution system and its constituent technologies, and the policy implications at both state and federal levels.

On September 24, 2010 representatives of artists, record labels, music publishers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), online distributors, collective licensing organizations, academia, and the public interest community gathered and considered the challenges and opportunities that widespread, easily accessed, low cost distribution and licensing offers the music industry. Over the last several years, the Supreme Court and the Federal Circuit have taken a number of steps suggesting that the law governing software patents is still very much in flux. In this conference, we will evaluate both the premises underlying the call for a fundamental reform–and, indeed, the possible abolishment of–software patents as well as some specific suggestions for changing how patents are granted and how patent litigation operates.
