Avatara Smith-Carrington (they/them) is an attorney and the current Tyron Garner Memorial Law Fellow at Lambda Legal. As the current Garner Memorial Law Fellow, Avatara’s work centers LGBTQ BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/People of Color) and BIPOC living with HIV. They currently serve as lead counsel in Fain v. Crouch, a federal lawsuit challenging West Virginia’s blanket exclusion of coverage for gender-confirming care in its state health insurance plans; and counsel in The Diversity Center v. Trump, a federal lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s Executive Order on Combating Race and Sex Stereotyping. During their time as the Garner Fellow, Avatara worked as a researcher on the Institute of Technology Law & Policy project on algorithmic fairness and disability rights at Georgetown University Law.
Avatara serves as a board member on the Advisory Board of the Kairos Fellowship–which is designed to build the next generation of leaders in the field of civic tech, digital campaigning, and online organizing–and serves as a board member on the Board of the Transgender Education Network of Texas. Prior to attending law school, Avatara was a digital campaigner at Planned Parenthood Action Fund in Washington, D.C. working on issues at the intersection of reproductive rights and voter suppression tactics. In their spare time, Avatara loves to discuss all things related to tech, race, and gender–and occasionally hits Dallas’ trails on their bike.
